As he was observing the armies on the battlefield of Kurkshetra with his dear friend Krishna Arjuna became overwhelmed with grief, realizing that even if he were victorious in the battle, all his friends and family members would be killed, and that would be another kind of defeat to him. 

This grief and compassion on the part of Arjuna led to his decision; soon after this, Arjuna declared to Krishna, "I will not fight!"

At this point, for Arjuna, a warrior on the battlefield with his enemy in front of him, it was unimaginable that Arjuna would not fight. For a Ksatriya, his duty is to fight for the right cause. 

This was setting the scene for Krishna to speak the Bhagavad-gita to His friend Arjuna, and through Arjuna, to all of us.
